Rotary Youth Exchange

Rotary Youth Exchange allows secondary-school students to spend part of their schooling in another country — learning the language, coming to know another culture and forming friendships that often last a lifetime.

The programme is sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries and is intended for young people aged 15 to 19.

Two kinds of exchange

Long-term exchange lasts a full school year. The student attends a local school and lives with several host families, which makes it possible to know a country from the inside rather than as a tourist.

Short-term exchange lasts from a few days to three months and is organised outside term time — as a camp, a tour or a family stay. There is also a Family to Family exchange, where two families host each other's children.

What the programme covers, and what it does not

The exchange covers accommodation, board and tuition. The participant bears the cost of the return flight, travel insurance, travel documents and personal expenses during the stay.

That is not a detail to gloss over — but it is considerably less than the same year abroad would cost by any other route.

How to apply

Candidates are usually students who stand out at school and in their community. The first step is to contact your local Rotary club — that is, us. Get in touch and we will explain the application process and this year's deadlines.
